Origin Story
Based in San Marcos de Tarrazú, San José, CoopeTarrazú is a Costa Rican cooperative of over 3,500 partners and associates. The organization opened in 1960 with 228 members and has remained committed to transparency, community solidarity, and continuous improvement since the beginning. The founding members purchased a dry mill together, and in 1966 certified their first lot of coffee for export. Today they provide hands-on technical assistance for their members, who together produce over five million bushels of coffee each year.
The Tarrazú region accounts for 25 percent of Costa Rica’s total coffee production. Members of CoopeTarrazú work together to research and implement sustainable farming practices to help preserve the mountainous environment and improve the quality of their coffees. Harvest coincides with the region’s dry season, which lasts from November to March. This not only contributes to coffee uniformity, but also allows producers to process their coffee by sun-drying. Tirra Estate’s honey processed coffee is pulped before drying, removing the skin and leaving the innermost layer of fruit–the sticky, sugary mucilage. The result is a smooth, naturally sweet cup of coffee.
