Springbok Wins Best Coffee Award

Charleston Coffee Cup “Best Coffee 2017”.

Each year, as the heat subsides here in the Lowcountry, the Charleston Coffee Cup brings together local and regional coffee roasters and shops to celebrate the specialty coffee community here in the Southeast. In 2017, the 4th Annual CCC was held on Sunday, November 5th at the Memminger Auditorium from 10am – 3pm.

With local brunch purveyors, artisans, live music and a latte art competition, the event was one for the books as attendees made their way through the auditorium tasting a wide array of coffees from over two dozen coffee roasters.

The “Best Coffee” competition is also sponsored by the Charleston Coffee Cup prior to the event, with the winner being announced the day of. Each roaster must submit 250g of a coffee to be analyzed and critiqued by a panel of six judges. The judges cup each coffee blindly, and in accordance to the SCAA protocol at Balzac Brothers’ CQI certified lab in the heart of downtown Charleston.

This year we are proud and honored to have won “Best Coffee” from among over two dozen roasters from five states, and many of which we admire.

For the 2017 entry, we submitted our Ethiopia – Guji Hambela (Washed). This coffee is Certified Organic and one we’ve been roasting for three seasons. It’s aroma is floral and fruity, with tasting notes of apricot, lavender and jasmine.

Having roasted many batches from this particular farm, we felt this coffee had the best shot at doing well in the competition.

Thankfully we were right.

In 2018, the Charleston Coffee Cup will again be held at Memminger Auditorium on Sunday, October 28th from 10 am – 3pm. If you can make it, stop by our booth for a chat and a taste of what we’re up to.
